Deck Strategy
Concept

A blue-black control deck that survives aggressive starts with cheap removal, sweepers, defensive Auras, and counterspells, then grinds out long games by filling its own graveyard to shrink Tolarian Terror and recur threats with Overlord of the Balemurk and Another Chance.

Synergies

  • Nowhere to Run + Shoot the Sheriff / Bitter Triumph: Nowhere to Run is a cheap flash enchantment that shrinks an opposing creature and lets your removal ignore hexproof and ward, which is exactly the kind of threat that normally beats a removal-heavy deck. It also pumps Tolarian Terror's cost reduction because it is not a creature in your graveyard.
  • Unable to Scream + the sweeper plan: Unable to Scream neutralizes the single biggest threat on the opponent's board for one mana, letting you save Malicious Eclipse and Deadly Cover-Up for the turn where they actually wipe a wide board.
  • Overlord of the Balemurk + Another Chance: Overlord mills four cards on entry and returns a creature or planeswalker from your graveyard to your hand, while Another Chance brings any creature card straight back to hand. Together they turn every creature you trade off into a card you get to cast again.
  • Tolarian Terror + cheap interaction: Bitter Triumph, Shoot the Sheriff, Malicious Eclipse, Phantom Interference, Deduce, Essence Scatter, and Negate all fill the graveyard, so Tolarian Terror frequently costs {2} or less for a 5/5 with ward {2} that dodges most removal.
  • Deep-Cavern Bat + recursion: The Bat rips the scariest nonland card from the opponent's hand on turn two, then becomes a recurrable flying body once it trades off.
  • Counter suite + discard: Phantom Interference, Essence Scatter, and Negate cover spells, while Deep-Cavern Bat and Nowhere to Run handle what has already resolved.

Mulligan Strategy

Keep hands with two to four lands, at least one piece of cheap interaction (Bitter Triumph, Shoot the Sheriff, Nowhere to Run, Unable to Scream, or Deep-Cavern Bat), and one way to generate cards (Deduce or Another Chance). Six-card hands are fine if they still contain a turn-two play plus a sweeper or a counterspell. Mulligan aggressively on one-land hands, on hands with no interaction against an unknown opponent, and on hands that only have expensive spells (Deadly Cover-Up, Overlord of the Balemurk) with nothing to do early. Never keep a seven that cannot answer a turn-one or turn-two creature.

Game Plan

Early (turns 1-3): Hold up one or two mana. Cast Deduce to smooth your draws and put a spell in the graveyard. Kill or freeze the first real threat with Bitter Triumph, Shoot the Sheriff, Nowhere to Run, or Unable to Scream, and deploy Deep-Cavern Bat to strip a key card from the opponent's hand. Counter only what actually matters, not the first spell cast. Mid (turns 4-6): Stabilize with Malicious Eclipse against go-wide decks or Deadly Cover-Up against larger boards. Resolve Overlord of the Balemurk to mill four and return your best creature or planeswalker from the graveyard to hand, and use Another Chance to buy back a creature you already traded. Hold up Phantom Interference, Essence Scatter, or Negate to protect your position. Late (turn 7+): The deck wins by attrition. Tolarian Terror comes down for two or three mana, Overlord of the Balemurk keeps recycling threats, and every counter in hand protects the finish. Attack with Deep-Cavern Bat, Tolarian Terror, and Overlord of the Balemurk, and keep at least one counterspell back for the opponent's last play.

Weaknesses

  • Graveyard hate: Rest in Peace-style effects and exile removal blank Overlord of the Balemurk and Another Chance and slow down Tolarian Terror, so lean on the enchantment suite and counterspells to keep the game under control.
  • Hexproof and uncounterable threats: Nowhere to Run answers hexproof, but truly uncounterable spells still slip through; use Deep-Cavern Bat to discard them proactively.
  • Very fast aggro: If you stumble on lands or miss a sweeper, Malicious Eclipse and Deadly Cover-Up can arrive too late; mulligan for early interaction and use Unable to Scream to buy a turn.
  • Land-light starts: The deck wants three to five lands by turn four. Evolving Wilds entering tapped can cost tempo, so sequence your basics first when possible.
  • Enchantment removal: Nowhere to Run and Unable to Scream are cheap enough that losing one is not a disaster, but avoid tapping out with an Aura as your only answer to a resolved threat.
