Verdant Genesis
HistoricDeck Strategy
A budget Selesnya lifegain deck that ramps lands and converts every life-gain trigger into growing +1/+1-counter creatures, replacing the cut Valkyries and all Felidar Retreats with even more redundant lifegain engines.
- Trelasarra, Moon-Dancer grows a +1/+1 counter and scries every time you gain life, so the same triggers that pump Cleric of Life's Bond also smooth your draws and build an attacker.
- Ajani's Welcome, Impassioned Orator, Daxos, Blessed by the Sun, Gilded Goose, and the remaining Righteous Valkyrie each gain life on their own, so with four Pridemate-style payoffs (Trelasarra, Cleric of Life's Bond, and the last Voice of the Blessed plus Daxos) every small creature drop adds counters to something.
- Impassioned Orator and Ajani's Welcome trigger off casting creatures, which means every Cleric of Life's Bond or Trelasarra you play both gains you life and adds counters to your other payoffs — self-reinforcing engine cards rather than win-more.
- Avacyn's Pilgrim and Paradise Druid fix your budget mana so you still hit Cleric of Life's Bond on turn two and Heliod or the last Valkyrie on curve.
- Blossoming Sands and Selesnya Guildgate gain you life as they enter, adding extra triggers and helping you reach the 27-life threshold for the remaining Righteous Valkyrie and Speaker of the Heavens.
- Winding Way digs for creatures (keeping the snowball rolling) or lands (fixing the budget land base), and Selesnya Charm exiles big threats or makes a 2/2 Knight token that adds counters and lifegain triggers.
Keep hands with 2-4 lands, at least one green source, and a mix of ramp (Gilded Goose, Avacyn's Pilgrim, Paradise Druid) plus a payoff (Cleric of Life's Bond, Trelasarra, Voice of the Blessed, or Righteous Valkyrie). Mulligan hands with 0-1 lands, no green source, or all payoffs and no way to gain life. A six-card hand with a mana dork and one payoff is an easy keep — never keep an opening hand without a Forest, Blossoming Sands, or Selesnya Guildgate.
Early: deploy Gilded Goose, Avacyn's Pilgrim, or Paradise Druid for acceleration, then start the engine with Ajani's Welcome, Impassioned Orator, Daxos, Blessed by the Sun, Cleric of Life's Bond, or Trelasarra, Moon-Dancer. Mid: land Heliod, Sun-Crowned or the lone Righteous Valkyrie to multiply counters, use Impassioned Orator plus Ajani's Welcome so every creature you cast triggers multiple payoffs at once, and use Winding Way to refill. Hold Selesnya Charm for a surprise exile or an extra 2/2 Knight. Speaker of the Heavens starts making Angels once your life total crosses 27. Late: close with a giant Trelasarra, Cleric of Life's Bond, or Voice of the Blessed strengthened by Heliod's activated ability, plus Speaker of the Heavens Angel tokens.
Cutting Felidar Retreat removes your landfall plan and extra bodies, and cutting the extra Valkyries and Voices lowers the ceiling on your top-end, so games go longer and you lean hard on the lifegain engine to grind — sweepers like Farewell, Wrath of God, and Meathook Massacre are now more punishing because you have fewer individually large threats. The common/uncommon taplands are slower than fetchable duals, so aggressive red decks and fast combo can punish a slow start. Enchantment or artifact removal answers Heliod and Ajani's Welcome, and losing Boseiju and Collected Company means you have fewer flexible answers.
