Deck Strategy
Concept
An Esper (Blue/White/Black) control deck built entirely from commons, uncommons, and a tiny rare/mythic allowance: it trades one-for-one with cheap instant-speed removal and countermagic, stabilizes with Split Up, then buries the opponent under Beza, the Bounding Spring and a dense counter suite.
Synergies
- No More Lies + Shoot the Sheriff + Long Goodbye: Because nearly everything in the deck costs two mana or less, you can always hold up interaction on turn two and pick the right answer based on what the opponent does — a counterspell, a cheap kill spell, or an uncounterable kill spell for small threats.
- Deduce + Quick Study + No More Lies: Deduce filters your draws and fixes your colors, Quick Study refills your hand at instant speed, and No More Lies buys the tempo you need to actually resolve them. Together these turn your early turns into pure card selection that never taps you out.
- Split Up + Essence Scatter/Negate: Sweep the board with Split Up, then hold up a counterspell for whatever threat the opponent deploys afterward. This one-two punch is how the deck fully stabilizes against aggro.
- Beza, the Bounding Spring + board wipes: After Split Up clears the board, Beza refills your hand, gains life, and creates blockers or Treasure based on whatever the opponent is ahead on — turning a wipe into a huge swing in your favor.
- Nowhere to Run + Shoot the Sheriff / Bitter Triumph: Nowhere to Run strips hexproof/ward and shrinks a threat, letting your sorcery- and instant-speed removal actually connect on the following turn.
Mulligan Strategy
- Keep hands with 2–4 lands, at least one cheap interaction spell (Deduce, No More Lies, Shoot the Sheriff, Long Goodbye, Bitter Triumph), and a clear plan for turns 3–5.
- Mulligan any hand that is all lands, has no spell cheaper than three mana, or has only one color of mana and no dual land to fix it. The mana base leans on taplands, so color access matters more than land count.
- On the play, favor hands with a turn-two play (Deduce or held-up removal). On the draw, you can keep a slightly slower hand if it contains Split Up plus a counterspell.
- Because white sources are limited to the eight white-producing dual lands, do not keep a hand whose only white card is Beza unless you also hold two or more white sources.
Game Plan
- Early (Turns 1–3): Lead with a tapland, then hold up two mana for No More Lies, Shoot the Sheriff, Long Goodbye, or Bitter Triumph. Cast Deduce whenever you have a spare turn to fix colors and filter. Do not tap out for anything that is not directly answering a threat.
- Mid (Turns 4–6): Once the opponent has committed several creatures, cast Split Up to reset the board, then immediately protect your position with Essence Scatter or Negate. Follow up with Banishing Light on any remaining permanent or with Beza, the Bounding Spring to refill your hand and stabilize your life total.
- Late (Turn 7+): Attack with Beza and use your remaining removal and counterspells to clear a path. Every counter you hold is effectively a removal spell, so treat your hand as a wall of answers and only commit resources when you are certain you can win the exchange. You should win any topdeck war thanks to Quick Study and Deduce.
Weaknesses
- Fast aggro (Mono-Red, Gruul, Mono-Black) can punish the tapped-land mana base before Split Up comes online — mulligan aggressively for cheap interaction.
- Non-creature combo and big-mana ramp are awkward for a creature-heavy removal suite; Essence Scatter, Negate, and Disdainful Stroke are your only answers, so sequence them carefully and save them for the payoff, not the setup.
- Three-color mana base on taplands: with only eight white sources and no untapped duals, the deck can stumble on colors. Prioritize the white-producing duals early when you hold white cards.
- Graveyard and reanimation strategies: this build has no graveyard hate, so decks that abuse the graveyard can out-grind you if you run out of counterspells.
- The rare/mythic ceiling: Split Up and Beza are your only powerful cards, so if they are countered or discarded you must win with incremental one-for-ones, which is slow against value engines like Unholy Annex or Caretaker's Talent.
