Esper Adaptive Control
AlchemyDeck Strategy
A flexible Esper (Blue/White/Black) control deck that leans on cheap permission, spot removal, targeted discard, and a small but resilient finisher package so it can adapt to any opponent.
Syncopate and Essence Scatter answer early threats efficiently, while Negate and Cancel clean up non-creature spells and bigger payoffs. Duress and Pilfer strip the opponent's best card before it ever resolves, letting your counterspells point only at what matters. Murder and Pacifism provide clean one-for-one removal for creatures that slip through, and Banishing Light permanently exiles any nonland permanent. Kaito, Bane of Nightmares comes down as a planeswalker that generates card selection and a growing attacker, backed up by Serra Angel and Sengir Vampire as evasive closers that dodge most ground blockers. Evolving Wilds and Terramorphic Expanse fix your three-color mana while thinning the deck for better draws.
Keep any hand with 2–4 lands, at least one piece of cheap interaction (Duress, Syncopate, Essence Scatter, Murder, or Pacifism), and a way to reach three or four mana. Mulligan hands with no action before turn three, hands with only expensive spells, or one-land hands without Evolving Wilds/Terramorphic Expanse. Against aggro, prioritize hands with early removal; against control, prioritize Duress plus Negate/Cancel and card advantage from Kaito.
Early: trade one-for-one. Duress/Pilfer to strip their key spell, Syncopate or Essence Scatter their first threat, and Pacifism anything that resolves. Mid: stabilize the board with Murder and Banishing Light, then deploy Kaito, Bane of Nightmares to start generating advantage while holding up Negate or Cancel. Late: close with Serra Angel and Sengir Vampire while keeping two mana open for permission, and use your discard to strip their last outs before committing to the attack.
This build is removal-light on sweepers, so very wide token or aggro starts can overwhelm your one-for-one answers. Hexproof, indestructible, and recursive graveyard threats must be answered with Banishing Light or raced, not simply killed. The manabase is basic-heavy with very few sources of white, so double-white cards like Serra Angel can be stranded — fetch carefully and prioritize Swamps and Islands early. Finally, opposing counterspell-heavy control decks can win the permission war if you tap out for a finisher at the wrong moment.
