Historic Instant-Speed Living End (Cascade)
HistoricDeck Strategy
An instant-speed Living End combo deck: cycle oversized creatures into the graveyard, fire Violent Outburst on the opponent's turn to cascade straight into Living End, and reanimate a lethal board while wiping theirs.
- Deterministic cascade: the deck contains zero cards with mana value 2 or less other than Living End (mana value 0). Every cycler is mana value 4+, Force of Negation is 3, Force of Vigor is 4, and additional mana-value-3 cards are simply skipped by cascade. That means Violent Outburst always finds Living End, no whiffs.
- Cyclers are the engine: Striped Riverwinder, Desert Cerodon, Generous Ent, Oliphaunt, Waker of Waves and Curator of Mysteries all cycle for 1-2 mana, digging toward the combo while stocking the graveyard with reanimation targets.
- One-sided wipe plus mass reanimation: Living End exiles all creature cards from both graveyards, then everyone sacrifices every creature, then your exiled creatures return. Kill their board, get a lethal board of 6/4s, 6/5s and 7/7s.
- Free protection: Force of Negation pitches a spare blue cycler to counter a hate piece or a game-ending play, and Force of Vigor pitches a spare green cycler to blow up Tormod's Crypt, Soul-Guide Lantern, Grafdigger's Cage, Leyline of the Void or Rest in Peace for zero mana, even on turn one on the draw.
- Uncounterable hate answers: Boseiju, Who Endures and Otawara, Soaring City channel to destroy or bounce opposing graveyard hate when their Forces are gone.
- Faerie Macabre discards itself for free to strip key cards from an opponent's graveyard (mirror, Phoenix, reanimator) and is itself a flying reanimation target for your own Living End.
- Keep any hand with Violent Outburst plus 2-3 lands and at least two cyclers.
- Keep hands with Living End plus a free Force and cyclers, since a suspended-living-end backup plan is fine when the board is slow.
- Keep Force of Vigor or Force of Negation plus a blue/green card when facing a deck likely to slam turn-one graveyard hate.
- Mulligan hands with no cascade spell, no Living End, or that cannot reach three mana (red plus green for Violent Outburst).
- Don't go below five unless desperate: cycling restores card count but the deck needs critical mass of cyclers.
Early (turns 1-2): play untapped duals, cycle the cheapest creatures (Striped Riverwinder, Waker of Waves, Curator of Mysteries) to build the graveyard and dig. Never deploy creatures to the board. Hold up Force of Vigor or Force of Negation against turn-one Crypt/Lantern. Use Faerie Macabre to strip opposing graveyards. Mid (turns 3-4): cast Violent Outburst on the opponent's end step so they cannot interact with sorcery-speed windows. It cascades into Living End, wiping their board and returning 4-7 creatures at once. If you are short on creatures, keep cycling and holding up interaction instead. Late: attack for lethal, then use Boseiju/Otawara or Force of Vigor to clear blockers or hate pieces so the alpha strike connects. If Violent Outburst is countered or discarded, use the Zagoth Triome to suspend Living End (Suspend 3) as a backup clock, or cast it for free if anything reduces its cost, and remember the second Living End from hand or suspend finishes the game after the first one is answered.
Pre-combo graveyard hate (Leyline of the Void, Rest in Peace, Grafdigger's Cage, Tormod's Crypt, Soul-Guide Lantern) is the biggest problem; always hold Force of Vigor, Boseiju or Otawara for it. Targeted discard (Thoughtseize/Duress) can strip a piece, though redundant cyclers and 8 combo pieces blunt it. Fast aggro that kills before turn 3-4 and countermagic aimed at your cascade spell are bad matchups. Note Living End also returns the opponent's creatures, so decks that fill their own graveyard (reanimator, mirror, Phoenix) can claw back the same turn, and Shardless Agent was cut because it is not legal in Arena.
