Mossborn Hydra Landfall Stompy
StandardDeck Strategy
A mono-green +1/+1 counters deck built around Mossborn Hydra, an exponential landfall threat that grows every time you play a land and tramples over the opponent.
Mossborn Hydra enters with one +1/+1 counter, and its landfall ability doubles the number of counters on it every time a land enters under your control — a single extra land turns it into a 2/2, then a 4/4, then an 8/8 trampler, so every land you draw behaves like a huge pump spell. Bristly Bill, Spine Sower is your second landfall payoff: it puts a +1/+1 counter on a target creature each time a land enters, and its {3}{G}{G} activated ability doubles the counters on every creature you control, which is usually lethal alongside a large Hydra. Sentinel of the Nameless City grows itself whenever counters land on your other creatures, and Innkeeper's Talent both adds counters each turn and doubles the counters you place once it is fully leveled, supercharging Bristly Bill and Sentinel. Cenote Scout explores into extra lands or action, Hamlet Glutton gives you a big body that keeps the pressure on, Insidious Fungus and Bite Down answer problem permanents, and Giant Growth plus Bushwhack protect your Hydra in combat or clear blockers so its trample damage gets through.
Keep hands with 2–4 lands, at least one cheap creature (Cenote Scout, Bristly Bill, or Mossborn Hydra) and at least one payoff or trick. Mulligan any 0–1 land hand, and be cautious with all-spell hands that have no early board presence. A hand with five lands is acceptable if it contains Mossborn Hydra plus a two-drop, because extra lands are actively good for the doubling engine.
Early game: deploy Cenote Scout or Bristly Bill on turns one and two to start growing a board and to keep hitting land drops, then land Mossborn Hydra as soon as possible. Mid game: sequence your land drops carefully so each one doubles the Hydra, add Innkeeper's Talent for counter doubling, and use Giant Growth, Bushwhack, Bite Down and Bristly Bill's ability to push trample damage or win combats. Late game: use Hamlet Glutton and your counter placement to close out; a Mossborn Hydra that has doubled three or four times, backed by Bushwhack or Innkeeper's Talent's doubling, ends the game in one or two swings.
Mossborn Hydra has no built-in protection, so instant-speed removal or a well-timed sweeper can reset your entire plan — try not to over-commit and hold Giant Growth or Bushwhack when removal is likely. Mono-green gives you very little interaction, so you are soft to flying creatures, deathtouch blockers, and fast go-wide aggro that outraces you. Counter-based plans are also punished by effects that exile, bounce, or remove +1/+1 counters, and you must protect your land drops against mana-denial strategies because the doubling engine depends on consistently hitting them.
