Selesnya Saproling Swarm
HistoricDeck Strategy
A budget-friendly, zero-rare go-wide White-Green token aggro deck that floods the battlefield with cheap Soldier, Saproling, Human, and Spirit tokens, then converts that swarm into lethal damage with Intangible Virtue and Pledge of Unity.
Intangible Virtue + every token maker: Intangible Virtue turns each 1/1 into a 2/2 with vigilance, so Raise the Alarm, Resolute Reinforcements, and Haazda Marshal suddenly produce real threats that can also stay back to block. Because the pump only applies to tokens, your small utility creatures stay size-appropriate while every Saproling and Soldier becomes a legitimate clock.
Pledge of Unity + a wide board: Every creature you control gets a permanent +1/+1 counter and you gain a life per creature. Casting this after resolving a kicked Saproling Migration or while Haazda Marshal has been churning out Soldiers often adds 5+ power across the team and puts you safely out of burn range.
Clarion Spirit + cheap token spells: Clarion Spirit rewards casting two spells in a turn. Sequencing one token spell into another on turns three and four creates a 1/1 flying Spirit on top of your ground swarm, giving you an evasive threat that ignores opposing ground blockers.
Haazda Marshal + a wide board: Attacking with three or more creatures turns Haazda Marshal into a repeatable token engine — each combat adds another 1/1 Soldier, which in turn fuels the three-attacker requirement on the following turn.
Usher of the Fallen + Intangible Virtue: Usher of the Fallen is a one-drop that can later boast to make a 1/1 Warrior token. Every extra body matters because the Warrior enters as a 2/2 with vigilance under Intangible Virtue, letting you attack and still hold blockers.
Keep hands with two to three lands that include at least one white source and one green source, plus at least two cheap token producers (Usher of the Fallen, Haazda Marshal, Raise the Alarm, Saproling Migration, Resolute Reinforcements). Ship hands with only taplands and no one- or two-drop, hands with fewer than two lands, and hands that contain Intangible Virtue but no way to make tokens. Because this budget mana base is tapland-heavy, a hand with a turn-one dropped Forest or dual into a turn-two token maker is a strong keep.
Early game (turns 1-2): Lead with Usher of the Fallen when your land allows it, otherwise start deploying dual lands and drop a token maker on turn two — Haazda Marshal, Raise the Alarm, Resolute Reinforcements, or Saproling Migration — so you enter turn three with three or more bodies on board.
Mid game (turns 3-4): Deploy Intangible Virtue to upgrade your whole board, then attack with everything. Use Conclave Tribunal, ideally convoked with spare tokens, to remove the one blocker or planeswalker that stops your swarm. Clarion Spirit turns your second spell each turn into extra fliers, and Haazda Marshal keeps adding Soldiers on every three-creature attack.
Late game (turns 5+): Empty your hand of token spells, then close with a big Pledge of Unity or a kicked Saproling Migration for four Saprolings. Attack in a way that forces bad blocks, since Intangible Virtue-empowered tokens usually win combat. If the game stalls, use Join the Dance's flashback cost to rebuild a board straight from the graveyard.
- Sweepers: Cards like Wrath of God, Shatter the Sky, or Deafening Clarion punish you hard because you commit many small creatures. Don't overextend into an obvious board wipe — hold back a token maker or a Join the Dance in hand so you can reload after the dust settles.
- No rare bombs: The deck runs zero rares, so it has no card advantage engine or haymaker like Collected Company or Serra Paragon. A resolved planeswalker or a big lifelinking threat can outgrind you if the game goes long.
- Tapped lands: Blossoming Sands, Selesnya Guildgate, Tranquil Expanse, and Arctic Treeline all enter the battlefield tapped, so your early turns are slow. Be careful about keeping hands with too many taplands, and mulligan away hands that cannot cast a turn-two token maker.
- Enchantment removal on Intangible Virtue: Cards like Reclamation Sage or Back to Nature weaken your entire board at once, so try to cast Intangible Virtue when you already have a critical mass of tokens and can leverage the pump immediately.
- Fliers and trample: Your ground swarm can be chump-blocked or raced in the air. Clarion Spirit's Spirits and your vigilance blocks are your main answers, so prioritize them in matchups against flying decks.
