Witherbloom Hand-Ripper
StandardDeck Strategy
A disruptive Golgari midrange deck that strips the opponent's hand with Duress and Deep-Cavern Bat, controls the board with cheap removal, and grinds out card advantage through Food synergies, Vinereap Mentor, Unholy Annex, and Overlord of the Balemurk, supported by a tuned 15-card sideboard.
Deep-Cavern Bat exiles a key card from the opponent's hand, and Bitter Triumph plus Shoot the Sheriff clear the way for your evasive threats. Bakersbane Duo creates Food tokens, which are the engine of the deck: they pay the bargain and sacrifice costs on Candy Grapple (turning it into -5/-5 removal) and Fanatical Offering (drawing two cards), and they fuel Vinereap Mentor's counters. Bushwhack ramps into your four-drops or fights a blocker, and Cenote Scout explores to fix your draws while filling the graveyard for Overlord of the Balemurk to rebuy. Unholy Annex converts every end step into a card and a life-drain once a Demon or big threat is on board, while Overlord of the Balemurk returns your best creature to hand for another round of disruption. Overprotect shields your key threat from a removal spell and pushes through the final points of damage.
Keep hands with two to four lands, at least one cheap interaction spell (Bitter Triumph, Shoot the Sheriff, or Bushwhack), and a proactive two-drop such as Deep-Cavern Bat or Bakersbane Duo. Mulligan hands with zero or one land, no creatures, no interaction, or multiple copies of Unholy Annex and Overlord of the Balemurk. Five-card hands are keepable if they contain a land, a two-drop, and a removal spell.
Early game: deploy Cenote Scout or a Food-maker to apply pressure, use Deep-Cavern Bat or a post-board Duress to strip the opponent's best card, and hold up mana for Bitter Triumph or Shoot the Sheriff. Mid game: land Vinereap Mentor and Bakersbane Duo to build a wide board of Food and counters, drop Unholy Annex to start drawing an extra card each end step, and protect your best creature with Overprotect. Late game: resolve Overlord of the Balemurk to rebuy your best creature, keep the board clear with removal, and close the game with evasive damage plus Unholy Annex drain.
Mass removal and exile effects (Farewell, Sunfall) can undo a wide board, and graveyard hate blanks Overlord of the Balemurk. The mana base is slightly slow due to Terramorphic Expanse, so fast aggressive decks can punish a stumble. Control decks with countermagic can delay your key threats, and decks that go over the top faster require you to lean on hand disruption and sideboard answers.
Bring in Duress against control and combo to strip counters and key pieces, and add Fanatical Offering plus Candy Grapple when you need to cash in Food for cards and cheap removal. Fell and Nowhere to Run come in versus midrange and hexproof/ward threats, Pick Your Poison answers artifacts, enchantments, and fliers, and Giant Growth wins combat and pushes through the last points of damage. Trim Overprotect, one Bushwhack, and the slowest top-end cards when you need a faster, more interactive configuration.
