Deck Strategy
Concept
A budget-friendly Esper draw-go control deck that gradually strips the opponent of every resource using cheap countermagic, discard-adjacent disruption, Narset, Parter of Veils, and uncounterable sweepers until they have no hand, no board, and no route to victory — at which point they concede.
Synergies
- Narset, Parter of Veils + Counterspell / Dovin's Veto / Sinister Sabotage: Narset caps each opponent at one card drawn per turn, so their cantrips and draw engines fizzle while your countermagic removes whatever single card they top-deck.
- Sinister Sabotage + Narset: Surveil lets you filter your draws and dig deeper for answers every time you counter something, and with Narset out the opponent never refills.
- Murmuring Mystic + every instant and sorcery: Each counter, removal spell, or wipe you cast creates a 1/1 flying Bird, so your interaction doubles as an evasive clock that keeps growing as the game drags on.
- Teferi, Hero of Dominaria + Murmuring Mystic: Teferi's +1 untaps lands and draws while Narset starves the opponent, letting you hold up countermagic every turn and still add Birds. His -3 tucks their single best permanent.
- Supreme Verdict + countermagic: The uncounterable sweeper clears any board they commit to, then you immediately reload the lock with Dovin's Veto and Counterspell on their next play.
Mulligan Strategy
Keep any hand with 3-5 lands and at least one cheap interactive spell (Fatal Push, Counterspell, Despark, or Mortify) plus a way to dig (Consider or Narset). Mulligan hands with fewer than 3 lands, more than 5 lands, no blue source, or no play that affects the board before turn 3. Since most of the mana base enters tapped, favor hands containing an untapped Island to keep Counterspell online on turn 2.
Game Plan
- Early (T1-T3): Deploy an untapped land, hold up Fatal Push or Counterspell, and cantrip with Consider to hit land drops and find answers. Never tap out without a reason.
- Mid (T4-T7): Resolve Narset and Murmuring Mystic, then trade one-for-one with counterspells and spot removal. Fire Cry of the Carnarium or Supreme Verdict the instant the opponent over-commits to the board, and save Dovin's Veto for the spell that actually matters.
- Late (T8+): Land Teferi, Hero of Dominaria for relentless card advantage and to tuck their key permanents. Win with an ever-growing swarm of Murmuring Mystic Birds or a Teferi emblem while keeping countermagic up every single turn. The end state is an opponent with an empty hand, an empty board, and no legal line to victory — they concede.
Weaknesses
- The all-common three-color mana base is mostly taplands, so you start a turn behind and sometimes cannot cast Supreme Verdict on curve against fast aggro.
- Graveyard and recursion strategies, since you run almost no graveyard hate.
- Fast combo decks that win before your countermagic comes online.
- Losing Murmuring Mystic and Teferi to discard or sweepers can leave you with no way to actually close the game.
- Extremely long games risk decking yourself if all your finishers are gone.
