Consuls' Judgment
StandardDeck Strategy
A White-Black midrange-control deck that strips the opponent's hand, trades removal one-for-one, and converts sweepers plus lifedrain into a huge life swing before finishing with evasive lifelinkers and Overlord of the Mistmoors.
- Authority of the Consuls + Day of Judgment: every creature the opponent plays enters tapped and gains you 1 life, so you can untap, sweep the board, and avoid hasty crack-back.
- Vein Ripper + Day of Judgment: Vein Ripper drains 2 life from each opponent and gains you 2 for every creature of theirs that dies, so your sweeper becomes a one-sided life swing.
- Deep-Cavern Bat + Duress: Duress strips their best noncreature answer, then the Bat exiles the next-best card from hand. Do this before tapping out for Preacher of the Schism so it survives to attack.
- Sheltered by Ghosts on Deep-Cavern Bat: exile the only creature that can block, then swing in the air with lifelink while the aura's ward makes the Bat hard to remove.
- Novice Inspector + Teysa, Opulent Oligarch: the Clue from Inspector is both card advantage and a free sacrifice permanent, so Teysa keeps generating value while you grind.
Keep hands with two to four lands, at least one cheap interaction spell (Bitter Triumph, Duress, Fell) and at least one threat or Authority of the Consuls. Because Evolving Wilds enters tapped, you need a hand that can cast a one- or two-mana spell on curve. Ship hands with zero black sources, zero white sources, all-lands, or hands that only function on turn five or later. Against aggro, aggressively keep Authority of the Consuls or Day of Judgment; against control, keep Duress and the evasive threats.
Early (turns 1-3): Duress or Deep-Cavern Bat to strip their best card, then Bitter Triumph or Fell anything that resolves. Play Novice Inspector on turn one so you have a Clue and a body to chump or sacrifice later. Against creatures, drop Authority of the Consuls immediately.
Mid (turns 4-6): Land Preacher of the Schism and start making lifelink tokens, or cast Overlord of the Mistmoors for its cheap impending mode so it makes fliers while staying an enchantment. Use Sheltered by Ghosts and Nowhere to Run to break through the board stall. Hold Day of Judgment until their board is worth more than yours.
Late (turn 7+): Vein Ripper plus a sweeper is your finisher; a single Day of Judgment with Vein Ripper out is often 6-10 points of life swing. Teysa, Opulent Oligarch and Vadmir, New Blood fill out the top end while you keep the board clear with one-for-one removal and Clue-driven card advantage.
- The manabase is basic-heavy with Evolving Wilds, so the deck is a turn slower than top-tier Standard decks and can stumble on colors in the first two turns.
- Enchantment-based removal (Sheltered by Ghosts, Nowhere to Run) is vulnerable to enchantment hate and instant-speed bounce.
- The deck is soft to fast combo and to decks that go over the top with uncounterable threats, since it has no counterspells.
- Heavy removal draws can be flooded with dead cards against control, so sideboarding extra discard is important.
