Mono-Red Spark Aggro
StandardDeck Strategy
A lean mono-red aggro-burn deck that deploys cheap hasty threats, backs them up with a wall of cheap burn, and closes the game by pointing Lightning Strike, Burst Lightning, and Shock at the opponent's face.
- Slickshot Show-Off is the deck's premier threat: it flies, has haste, and grows every time you cast a noncreature spell, so every Shock, Lightning Strike, Burst Lightning, or Abrade you cast both removes a blocker and pumps your evasive clock.
- Thrill of Possibility turns extra lands and dead copies of burn into gas, letting you keep the pressure going while also triggering your spell-rewarding threats.
- Lightning Strike, Burst Lightning, and Shock are flexible: early they kill blockers (mana dorks, one-drop threats), and late they simply deal damage to the opponent, so the exact same cards shift roles at the flip of a switch.
- Rampaging bodies like Emberheart Challenger, Hellspur Posse Boss, Calamity, Galloping Inferno, and Gastal Thrillroller threaten damage every turn, forcing the opponent to block into your burn spells, which is exactly where you want them.
- Scorching Dragonfire exiles instead of destroying, which matters against recursive threats and stops a blocker from coming back.
Keep any hand with 2-3 Mountains, at least one threat that costs one or two mana, and a mix of two or three burn spells. Mulligan hands with fewer than two lands, hands with five or more lands, and hands that are all burn with no creature to pressure with. A one-land hand is only keepable if it has Shock/ Lightning Strike plus two one-drops, but it is usually better to go to six.
Early (turns 1-3): deploy hasty one- and two-drops and start attacking immediately. Use Shock, Burst Lightning, and Lightning Strike only to clear blockers that would prevent damage, not on random targets, and hold Abrade for artifacts or key creatures. Mid (turns 4-6): keep attacking while chipping with burn. Use Thrill of Possibility to turn lands and excess copies of removal into more spells, and resolve Slickshot Show-Off or Hellspur Posse Boss to exploit a growing board. Scorching Dragonfire answers the biggest blocker. Late (turn 7+): stop trading and redirect everything upstairs. Every Lightning Strike, Burst Lightning, and Shock now represents the last few points of damage, and Calamity, Galloping Inferno or a pumped attacker usually finishes the job.
- Sweepers and mass removal blow out a board of small creatures; do not overextend into an obviously open board wipe.
- Lifegain and decks that go bigger or wider fast can outpace your burn if you fall behind on tempo.
- With 20 lands and a low curve, flooding out and drawing Mountains in the late game is a real risk, especially if you have already used your Thrill of Possibility copies.
