Mono-Black Wurm Quandary
StandardDeck Strategy
A mono-black midrange-control deck that disrupts the opponent, taxes their spells with Painful Quandary, and finishes with Massacre Wurm.
Duress and Deep-Cavern Bat clear the way for Painful Quandary. Candy Grapple, Nowhere to Run, Shoot the Sheriff, and Bitter Triumph keep the board stable until Massacre Wurm arrives. Massacre Wurm punishes small creature decks, while Painful Quandary makes every opposing spell expensive. Diresight smooths draws so the deck reliably finds its key payoffs.
Keep hands with two to four Swamps, at least one discard spell, and at least one removal spell. Mulligan one-land hands, hands with no interaction, and hands that cannot cast a relevant spell by turn three.
Early: use Duress and Deep-Cavern Bat to strip key cards while removing early threats. Mid: deploy Painful Quandary and continue trading resources efficiently. Late: cast Massacre Wurm to sweep small boards and close the game with its life-loss trigger and a large body.
Fast combo and control decks can race the taxation. Artifact, enchantment, and graveyard engines are difficult to answer. Cheap counterspells and efficient flyers can also pressure this deck before Massacre Wurm comes online.
