Simic Ramp Combo
HistoricDeck Strategy
A Simic combo deck aiming for turn 4-6 inevitability by using Kami of Whispered Hopes and Innkeeper's Talent to quickly grow Kami to 5+ power, then Karn, the Great Creator to fetch Staff of Domination from the sideboard, generating infinite mana to win with Goldvein Hydra or Karn's beatdown.
Innkeeper's Talent doubles each +1/+1 counter placed by Kami's land-tap triggers, turning three land taps into six counters, making Kami a 6/6 by turn 3 if you have three lands. Utopia Sprawl and mana dorks accelerate your mana, letting you play Kami and Innkeeper's Talent early. Karn, the Great Creator tutors for Staff of Domination, which combos with a 5+ power Kami to untap infinitely, producing infinite mana and allowing you to pump Goldvein Hydra or activate Karn's -2 repeatedly. Bristly Bill and Doubling Season provide additional counter multiplication for even faster growth.
Keep hands with at least two lands, a mana dork (Birds of Paradise or Gilded Goose), and one of the combo pieces (Kami, Innkeeper's Talent, or Karn). Hands with Utopia Sprawl on a forest are ideal. Avoid hands with three+ lands and no ramp or combo pieces.
Early (turns 1-2): Play a mana dork or Utopia Sprawl. On turn 2, if you have three mana, play Innkeeper's Talent. Otherwise, continue ramping. Mid (turn 3): Play Kami of Whispered Hopes and tap three lands to give it six counters (with Talent), making it a 6/6. If you have Bristly Bill, use it to accelerate further. Late (turns 4-5): Tap enough lands for five mana, cast Karn, the Great Creator and fetch Staff of Domination from the sideboard. Activate Kami to untap Staff, then use Staff's ability to draw cards and generate infinite mana. Finally, activate Karn again to fetch Goldvein Hydra, cast it with X = huge, and attack for lethal. Repulsive Mutation and Tamiyo's Safekeeping protect your key creatures from removal.
Vulnerable to early removal on Kami and board wipes. The combo requires three lands and a creature to tap; mana disruption (e.g., Blood Moon) can slow you down. Against mono-red prowess, the deck can be raced if you stumble on mana.
For defending against mono-red prowess, consider adding these artifacts to your sideboard for Karn to tutor:
- Ensnaring Bridge: Prevents all attackers if you have few cards in hand (easy after comboing).
- Witchbane Orb: Grants hexproof, protecting you from direct burn spells.
- Shadowspear: Provides lifelink to race burn and trample to push through blockers. If you already have Shadowspear, add a second Staff of Domination or Tormod's Crypt for versatility.
